Spring 2009 Update

The Generals softball team is in the middle of their 2009 season. They have lost 8 games by one run and are looking to close out the season by making a run at the A.I.I. post-season tournament. Leading the way thus far on the mound is junior Megan Rowe, and at the plate is senior Sloane Laiche. The Generals have played nationally ranked #6 William Carey University, #8 St. Gregory’s, and #10 University of Mobile. Playing such a tough schedule will only make this team better in the future.

Gulf Coast Invitational

The LSUA Generals softball team returned from the Gulf Coast Invitational in Alabama with a 1-4 record. They opened the tournament with preseason #4 St. Gregory’s. The two teams battled it out until the top of the sixth, when St. Gregory’s finally got on the board and won the game 4-0. Megan Rowe led the way on the mound, striking out seven of the St. Gregory’s batters. The Generals also played A.I.I. foe Thomas and lost 3-1, played pre-season # 12 Columbia (losing in extra innings 7-6) and Faulkner who knocked the Generals out of the tournament last year. The Generals held a 1-0 lead going into the sixth inning, when Faulkner scored six unanswered runs on four hits and four errors. In the final day of the tournament, in the Bronze Bracket, the Generals bats came alive, blasting Ohio Dominican 9-2. The final game of the Bronze Bracket was canceled due to inclement weather.

Spring 2009 Outlook

The 2009 spring season is quickly approaching, and the Generals softball team is gearing up for a tough season. “The spring will be very tough for our student-athletes, but with our dedication and determination to work hard to be successful on the field and in the class room, we will be able to put forth a great spring,” stated Coach Goodman. Megan Rowe, a junior from Jonesboro, says, “It’s going to be an exciting season for us. We have a year under our belts and know what to expect. We are familiar with a lot of the teams, and we know we can compete with all of them.” The Generals take the field Tuesday, February 10, at Delta State to open the 2009 season. Their first home game will be against Louisiana College on February 16 at the Cabrini Softball Complex. The Generals return four starters in senior Sloane Laiche, junior Megan Rowe, junior Amy Leonard, and sophmore Erin Brossett. Top newcomers include Jessica Pocorello, Amanda Savoie, Emmalea Dugas and Gina Laborde. With experienced returning players and quality new recruits, the 2009 season will be one to watch.
